The use of free-range poultry eggs as the indicator of the pollution in Eastern Ukraine

11. 12. 2018,

The study presents the results of monitoring free-range eggs from Kharkiv, Mariupol, and Krivyi Rih, cities in the eastern part of Ukraine, which were considered to be potentially contaminated by persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Eggs have been found to be sensitive indicators of POP contamination in soils or dust, and are a significant exposure pathway from soil pollution to humans. Eggs from contaminated areas can be readily lead to exposures, which exceed the thresholds for the protection of human health.
