The “Clean Air for Ukraine” team, together with the Czech NGO “Arnika” and representatives of the State Inspectorate, are taking sediment samples from the Dnipro River, south of Zaporizhzhia, in order to follow up the previous sampling that took place in July this year.
“At each site, we make a so-called mixed sample. We collect sediment from several points and mix it to increase the representativeness of the sample,” explains Marcela Chernokhova, coordinator of the “Clean Air for Ukraine” program, NGO Arnica (Czech Republic).
After the explosion of the Kakhovskaya HPP in June, the bottom and banks of the Dnipro River are being systematically studied by Czech and Ukrainian ecologists. In July 2023, the “Clean Air for Ukraine” team, together with representatives of the State Environmental Inspectorate and the Czech experts from the “Dekonta” company, took the first samples from the bottom of the Kakhovka Reservoir and the Dnipro River. As a result, among other things, the long-forbidden and dangerous insecticide DDT was found there.
