Molecular formula: TVOC
Characteristics: Solvents and dissolvents are precursors of ground-level ozone.
Occurrence: VOCs derive from the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. The chemical and other industries are the largest emitters.
Impact: VOCs in the air have negative effects on the nervous system and cause nausea, vomiting, and seizures. It is suspected that some organic compounds cause cancer.
Limit: Limits are established by the WHO for a particular substance. For more information, please see the WHO website.
